Good morning, Falcons! Did you know that just 45 minutes north of Bakersfield lies the historic town of Allensworth, known as California’s first Black settlement? It was the first town in California that was built by African Americans for African Americans in 1908. Calling it a “place of peace,” Sasha Biscoe says Colonel Allensworth’s goal was to bring the Black community together. Brisco says, “When you go to Allensworth, it just takes you back to what I would like to say the slaves accomplished when they landed in 1619. They created, they had vision, they facilitated and fought, and dreamed big and were committed to fulfilling those dreams.” What an amazing piece of history in our own backyard!
If you’d like to contribute something to honor Black history, such as a poem, song, artwork, or essay, please submit a video, photo, or document to Mrs. Heiss via email. The deadline for each week’s News from the Nest episode is the end of the day on Monday. Have questions? Please contact Mrs. Heiss in the Activities Office.
