Independence High School

Friday, February 11, 2022

Good morning, Falcons! One of the initiatives supported by our school district is Project Best, which focuses on young Black men in the Kern High School District, with the goals of encouraging academic excellence and good attendance, offering enrichment activities, acquainting students with educational opportunities, and assisting with college applications, and scholarships.  For more information, please visit the counseling office or the Kern High website.

If you’d like to contribute something to honor Black history, such as a poem, song, artwork, or essay, please submit a video, photo, or document to Mrs. Heiss via email.  The deadline for each week’s News from the Nest episode is the end of the day on Monday.  Have questions?  Please contact Mrs. Heiss in the Activities Office.

Special birthday shoutout to the amazing Ms. Michele, health office queen and mother of Formal King DAmonte! And Mrs. Medina, history teacher extraordinaire, happy birthday to you, as well!  And a very happy Valen-Birthday to our tech guru, Mr. Sturm!

Good news, everyone!  We have another Food Sale Day coming up on February 24!  There’s still plenty of room for more tables - make sure your club advisor signs up before the deadline today!

Interested in becoming a lifeguard for Bakersfield Recreation and Parks? There’s a pre-assessment at McMurtrey Aquatic Center that you must pass to join the training program. To receive information on the program and the registration process, see Mrs. Hoyt in the Career Center before school, at lunch, or after school. Students must be at least 16 years of age.

Don’t forget to check your RISE points!  We’re adding more to the store every day - you’ll even have the chance to redeem your points for a yearbook or prom ticket (while supplies last!)!

CSF is accepting applications until Feb 18th and applications can be found in the counseling secretary office or on the IHS website.

Remember, next week is a SPIRIT WEEK!  Tuesday, show your status: wear red if you’re in a relationship, pink if “it’s complicated,” and black if you’re single and ready to mingle!  Then come and join our lunch games to earn some candy!  Wednesday, dress like your celebrity crush - just make sure your celebrity crush still follows the IHS dress code!  Thursday, pick a side: pink or red?  We’ll see who reigns supreme!  And Friday is twin day!

Want to show someone how much you care?  Then stop by the table in the quad today during lunch to purchase a Valentine Gram!  For 2 dollars, your friend, crush, or favorite staff member will receive a card and fresh rose delivered next Tuesday!

The Writing Club will be hosting a Valentine's Day Poetry Bash soon! Bring any poetry to share, whether it's about love or heartbreak. They will meet in room 713 during 5th period lunch on February 16th.

Attention Millennium Falcon members! We will be taking club pictures today during our meeting in room 815. Wear your Star Wars gear and accessories. Until then, May the Force Be With You!

Attention NAMI Club Members:  Our club meeting has been changed to Friday instead of Thursday this week only.  Please come to P-10 for today’s meeting during both lunches.  We need to set up a time to have our club photo taken for the yearbook.

All students: Don't forget to buy your yearbook.  Sales end soon!  We cannot guarantee there will be extras.  Purchase your book in the finance office or on Jostens.com.  The final purchase deadline is February 25, which will be here before you know it!

The final payment deadline for AP tests is 2/25 - make sure to get your payment in by that date!

Enjoy your 3-day weekend, Falcons!  See you on Tuesday!
