Good morning, Falcons! Hope you had a great 3-day weekend - now the countdown to Spring Break begins!  Huge happy birthday wishes to Mrs. Bernal - we may not all love math, but we sure love you!

Today is the beginning of FFA Week!  To honor both FFA and Black History Month, let’s look at some influential Black Americans who made an impact on agriculture!  While George Washington Carver's reputation is largely based on his promotion of alternative crops to cotton -- specifically peanuts -- he was also a leader in promoting environmentalism. His innovations in the field of  crop rotation are considered breakthroughs in resource conservation, by preserving  soil and making farms more productive.

After earning his master’s degree in agriculture from Iowa State College  in 1896, he headed the agricultural department at Booker T.  Washington’s all-black Tuskegee Institute for nearly 20 years. Carver’s research and educational extension programs were aimed at getting farmers to use available resources to replace expensive commodities and developing a variety of uses for crops such as cow peas, sweet potatoes, and peanuts.

If you’d like to contribute something to honor Black history, such as a poem, song, artwork, or essay, please submit a video, photo, or document to Mrs. Heiss via email.  The deadline for each week’s News from the Nest episode is the end of the day on Monday.  Have questions?  Please contact Mrs. Heiss in the Activities Office.

Today’s FFA theme is College Tuesday - hope everyone is sporting their college gear!  Also, make sure to check out the lunch activities each day - I hear today involves an egg!!

Congratulations to our softball team for winning their tournament this weekend - go Falcons!

Juniors and seniors: Interested in one last shot at playing football or volleyball?  Then come to the informational meeting on Friday during 5th-period lunch for our Powderpuff and Iron Man games!  Volleyball players (Iron Man) will meet in P2, and flag football players (Powderpuff) will meet in Coach Schillhabel’s room (714).

Food sale day is coming up on Thursday!  Don’t forget to bring some extra cash with you so you can grab some delicious treats!  Also, make sure to check your RISE points -  we’ve added 50 Falcon Food Sale Flash Passes!  You can redeem your RISE points between now and 2/24 to earn the pass.  The passes are 20 points and allow freshmen and sophomores to leave third period 10 minutes early for the food sale, and juniors and seniors to check in with their fourth period teacher and go to the food sale for 15 minutes! Sounds like a deal to me!  Hurry and get yours before they’re all sold out!

Are you interested in learning more about different cultures?  The United Nations Club is hosting a cultural festival TODAY to celebrate Mother Language Day. We have several cultures and languages participating already, including Spanish, Hindi, Tagalog, Mandarin, and more! We’re looking forward to the performances, food, and learning more about the diversity at IHS. Everyone is welcome to attend. Meet us at the cafeteria today from 3-5pm!

Today is the last day to pay for your CSF application!  Applications can be found in the counseling office or on the IHS website.

All students: Don't forget to buy your yearbook.  Sales end soon!  We cannot guarantee there will be extras.  Purchase your book in the finance office or on Jostens.com.  The final purchase deadline is this Friday, February 25!

AP/Honors applications are now available!  From the IHS website, go to the "Counseling" drop down menu and select "Forms/Applications."  You may also pick up a copy in the Counseling Office.  They are due Friday, March 4th.

Scholarship Reminder! Attention, graduating seniors! If you are planning to attend college, university, or an accredited technical school following graduation, be sure to apply to the Kern County Foundation. Students with a GPA of 2.0 and higher are welcome to apply. One common application completed will be sent out to multiple organizations offering scholarships.  Don’t waste an opportunity for free money!

Have a great Tuesday!
