Good morning, Falcons! Happy birthday to Mr. Lee Varela - thank you for caring about us and also for making your amazing tacos (hint..hint..).  Hope you have an amazing day!

Hope you’ve been enjoying FFA week so far!  I believe I ate the equivalent of an entire honeycomb yesterday!  To honor both FFA and Black History Month, let’s look at another influential Black American who made an impact on agriculture!  After World War I, John W. Mitchell, a member of the North Carolina Agriculture &  Technology University Agriculture Hall of Fame, traveled three counties either by bicycle or horseback to organize the Eastern Columbus Credit Union to help African American farmers save money by buying their supplies together in bulk. He was appointed director of African American  extension services for the entire South for the U.S. Department of  Agriculture during the late 1940s.

If you’d like to contribute something to honor Black history, such as a poem, song, artwork, or essay, please submit a video, photo, or document to Mrs. Heiss via email.  The deadline for each week’s News from the Nest episode is the end of the day on Monday.  Have questions?  Please contact Mrs. Heiss in the Activities Office.

Today’s FFA theme is Flannel Thursday - hope everyone is sporting their coziest shirts!  Also, make sure to check out the lunch activity - today is Aggie Olympics!  Hopefully there will be pig ice skating.

Food sale day is TODAY!  We’ll have Popeye’s, KFC, pizza, La Rosa Bars, Jamba Juice, and more!  Remember, freshmen and sophomores with a Flash Passes may leave third period 10 minutes early for the food sale, and juniors and seniors may check in with their fourth period teacher and go to the food sale for 15 minutes!

Huge congratulations to our Esports team for beating West in yesterday's game 2-0, with an extra special shout-out to Je Heon (Jay-Hon) for being this game's MVP.  The Esports club will be out at lunch today with previews and sign-ups for their Smash Bros Tournament!  Make sure to check it out!

Seniors: If you ordered senior shirts/hoodies in the second round of ordering, you may pick them up during 5th-period lunch or after school.

Juniors and seniors: Interested in one last shot at playing football or volleyball?  Then come to the informational meeting tomorrow during 5th-period lunch for our Powderpuff and Iron Man games!  Volleyball players (Iron Man) will meet in P2, and flag football players (Powderpuff) will meet in Coach Schillhabel’s room (714).

Girls’ tennis will meet in Portable 7 during 4th period lunch on March 3rd for fall awards.  Please stop by to see Ms. Hinzo or Ms. Ramirez if you have any questions.

All students: Don't forget to buy your yearbook.  Sales end soon!  We cannot guarantee there will be extras.  Purchase your book in the finance office or on Jostens.com.  The final purchase deadline is this Friday, February 25!

AP/Honors applications are now available!  From the IHS website, go to the "Counseling" drop down menu and select "Forms/Applications."  You may also pick up a copy in the Counseling Office.  They are due Friday, March 4th.

Scholarship Reminder! Attention, graduating seniors! If you are planning to attend college, university, or an accredited technical school following graduation, be sure to apply to the Kern County Foundation. Students with a GPA of 2.0 and higher are welcome to apply. One common application completed will be sent out to multiple organizations offering scholarships.  Don’t waste an opportunity for free money!

Finally, take a moment and turn to your neighbor.  Ask her or him: What does RISE stand for?  (pause for 10 seconds)  If they can’t answer correctly, make sure you teach them!  We want to see RISE behavior on campus - that’s how you earn points!
