Good morning, Falcons, and happy Friday!  Hope you all enjoyed yesterday’s food sale!  Huge thank you to all the clubs who participated!

Another huge thank you goes out to our FFA students and teachers!  What a great week!  Remember, today at lunch is when you’ll get to see a teacher kiss a pig!  It’s truly the highlight of the school year!

To honor both FFA and Black History Month, let’s look at one more influential Black American who made an impact on agriculture!  Henry Blair was the second African American in history to be issued a United States patent. Born in Maryland in 1807 as a free man, Blair was a successful farmer, but he saw a need for more efficiency and smarter labor. His first invention was patented in 1834 as a “Seed-Planter” designed specifically to make the process of planting corn faster and simpler. Two years later he received his second patent for a “Cotton-Planter” that was pulled by two horses as it dropped cotton seeds into freshly plowed soil.   These inventions revolutionized the task of planting each individual seed by hand and made it easier for farmers to plant more in less time. Today, we see Blair’s influence in the mechanized farming machinery we use to plant and harvest onions on thousands of acres each year.

Seniors: If you ordered senior shirts/hoodies in the second round of ordering, you may pick them up during 5th-period lunch or after school.

Juniors and seniors: Interested in one last shot at playing football or volleyball?  Then come to the informational meeting today during 5th-period lunch for our Powderpuff and Iron Man games!  Volleyball players (Iron Man) will meet in P2, and flag football players (Powderpuff) will meet in Coach Schillhabel’s room (714).

Girls’ tennis will meet in Portable 7 during 4th period lunch on March 2nd for fall awards.  Please stop by to see Ms. Hinzo or Ms. Ramirez if you have any questions.

AP/Honors applications are now available!  From the IHS website, go to the "Counseling" drop down menu and select "Forms/Applications."  You may also pick up a copy in the Counseling Office.  They are due Friday, March 4th.

Scholarship Reminder! Attention, graduating seniors! If you are planning to attend college, university, or an accredited technical school following graduation, be sure to apply to the Kern County Foundation. Students with a GPA of 2.0 and higher are welcome to apply. One common application completed will be sent out to multiple organizations offering scholarships.  Don’t waste an opportunity for free money!

Finally, take a moment and turn to your neighbor.  Ask her or him: What does RISE stand for?  (pause for 10 seconds)  If they can’t answer correctly, make sure you teach them!  We want to see RISE behavior on campus - that’s how you earn points!
