Good morning, Falcons!

February is Black History Month, so we’ll be featuring tributes to contributions from Black artists, inventors, and activists this month.  Next week we’ll be featuring a musical tour of Black artists during lunch, featuring performances from IHS students.  Students - If you’d like to contribute something to honor Black history, such as a poem, song, artwork, or essay, please submit a video, photo, or document to Mrs. Heiss via email.  Today, we’ll close out our announcements with an original poem by Mattias V.C.

Thanks to everyone for helping us launch our new bathroom protocol!

Huge congratulations to our Falcon musicians who were selected to perform in the Kern County Honor Band/Orchestra on Tuesday - this was an extremely competitive group, so the fact that 21 of our musicians were selected is a huge compliment to their talent and the direction of Mr. Myers.

Calling all aspiring graphic designers!  We’re running a contest for the best designs for our upcoming freshman shirts and hoodies!  The shirt will be maroon and will need a front design in 1-2 colors.  The hoodie will be charcoal and will also need a front design in 1-2 colors.  Please include the phrase “Class of 2027.”  If your design is selected, you may choose from one of the following prizes: a yearbook, 2 prom tickets, or an equal amount in Falcon merch.  Please submit designs to Mrs. Heiss no later February 13.

Come out and cheer for our girls’ basketball and soccer teams today - they’re both battling Ridgeview!  It’s senior night for girls’ soccer, so come out and cheer for our senior falcons!

And now, as a tribute to Black History, here is an original poem written by IHS student Mattias V.C.:

Life Nonetheless

   By: Mattias V-C

Freedom;

Something that was never promised

But was given in the end.

Something that was taken

But gained once again.

Something only known as a dream

But now a reality.

Life;

Something as clear to see as a star on a dark stormy night.

Something that wasn’t as smooth and pretty as a rich woman’s silk scarf.

It had loose threads,

And holes

And stains of the tears that were cried

And burns from the memories that were slowly starting to fade.

It lacked fancy patterns

And shiny silk threads.

Instead it was bare.

But it was life nonetheless.

And one you should be proud to have lived

Whether it be bare and patternless

Or made with expert care and preserved for centuries,

It’s life nonetheless.

Thank you for that beautiful piece, Mattias!

Have a great day, Falcons!

Now, please stand for the pledge of allegiance.
