Greetings, Falcon Families!
Another great week is in the books! Our BSU, Project Best, and YWEL groups finished off the month with a door-decorating contest celebrating Black musical icons! LISTOS representatives from across the district hosted a Winter Forum at CTEC and then enjoyed lunch on the football field. Also, students in 9th through 11th grades were treated to our very first “Elective Fair” in the gym, where they were able to explore the many exciting programs offered at IHS.
Our Speech and Debate team has been incredibly busy and successful this week! On Saturday, February 21, Amari Johnson earned a spot as a finalist, bringing home a trophy for their humorous interpretation of “Tree Huggers.” As a team, our Falcons soared to victory by outperforming the Serra District and earning the Small Team Sweepstakes Award, a testament to their collective hard work and dedication. The momentum continued last week in Student Congress, where we secured victories in both houses. Valeria Carrillo placed 3rd in the House, while Katelyn Villegas-Rodriguez advanced as a finalist in the Senate and will go on to represent Independence High School at the State Competition this April! We are so proud of these students for embodying what it means to RISE through excellence, perseverance, and teamwork. Congratulations, Falcons!
As we move into March, our calendars are jam-packed with events and activities! This Tuesday, our choir will host a concert, we’ll celebrate our winter athletes on Wednesday evening at the Winter Sports Awards, and our Band/Orchestra will perform on Thursday night - don’t miss out!
If you have an incoming freshman, make sure to mark your calendar for Freshman Orientation on Thursday, March 12! Then, we’ll have two separate dates for registration: March 16 and March 23! We’re excited to welcome the Class of 2030!
There are only a few short weeks before the end of Quarter 3, so if your student is struggling in one or more subjects, please encourage them to attend our after-school tutoring sessions available on Tuesdays through Thursdays (late transportation provided).
Another valuable resource that’s available to students at school and at home is Tutor.com. This website provides 24/7 live, online tutoring services to students in any subject. Tutoring can be via text or video chat, and all tutors are highly trained professionals that can support students with any needs they might have. This includes reviewing concepts, homework assistance, essay analysis, and study help for upcoming tests. Find more information on Kern High’s Digital Resource page.
Interested in more ways to get involved at IHS? Looking for some additional resources? Our Parent and Family Center is here to help! Find out how to become an “observer” on Canvas to track your student’s academic progress.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 661.834.8001 - we appreciate your support!
Sincerely,
