COUNSELING CORNER
The CSU and UC application submission window opened October 1st.
On Saturday, October 21st, from 11:30am – 2pm, the Black Student Union at Bakersfield High School will be hosting our 2nd annual College & Scholarship Application Workshop. This workshop will center on college application processes specific to the unique needs of African American/Black students and scholarship opportunities unique to this same population. The workshop will provide assistance with HBCU, UC, CSU, and other Common App college applications, as well as personal essays and application question responses. Students from all schools are welcome to join as long as they RSVP and have their own transportation. For further information, reach out to Jennifer Jenkins at BHS.
Del Oro High School will be hosting an event on October 26 to introduce Kern County students and their families to the UC system, with admissions representatives present to answer questions and provide information about all 9 UC campuses.

Greetings, Falcon Families!
We have officially started the second quarter of the year! Report cards will be mailed out on Friday - remember, if your student participates in a sport or activity, they must maintain a 2.0 GPA. Eligibility will be determined on October 23. If your student needs some additional help in one or more subjects, we have an excellent after-school tutoring program that runs from 4:15pm to 5:15pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with a bus provided for students needing later transportation.
We celebrated more than 350 students who received Academic Excellence awards this past Wednesday - students who earned a 3.5 GPA or higher for both semesters of the 2022-2023 school year received an academic letter (first-time awardees), a Lamp of Knowledge pin (second-time awardees), or a bar (third-time awardees).
Independence is proud to present our new “SOAR” center - this is a “student advocacy” resource in which student mentors are trained in problem-solving techniques with the goal of improving campus culture and creating a welcoming environment for all Falcons. Under the direction of teacher Victoria Hopkins, several groups are already being trained and prepared to provide peer mentoring, along with lessons in mindfulness and building positive relationships.
Senior parents! Jostens will be on campus tomorrow (Monday) to provide information regarding graduation regalia (caps, gowns, etc.). They will return on Tuesday, October 24, during lunch to take orders.
If your freshman, sophomore, or junior student missed our first picture day, they'll have another opportunity on Tuesday, October 17. Students will be called by grade level to report to the gym lobby for photo makeups/re-takes. Order forms will be provided.
Conditioning for winter sports (soccer, wrestling, and basketball) began on October 9 - please make sure you’ve submitted your student’s athletic packet and sports physical!
October is a busy - but exciting - month, with Senior Nights for Tennis, Volleyball, Cross-Country, Water Polo, Football, Cheer, Band, and Color Guard teams! We’ll also be honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month at our “Pink-Out” games (football and volleyball). Students and staff alike are looking forward to our first Food Sale Day, during which clubs invite food trucks and other vendors to sell a variety of food and beverages during lunch, on October 19! We’ll round out the month with our 2nd-Annual Trunk or Treat event!
Members of the community will be joining staff and students this upcoming Wednesday for Principal Partners Day - this is a chance for us to showcase the myriad programs and services offered at IHS, as well as an opportunity to connect with local community members and organizations.
Interested in more ways to get involved at IHS? Looking for some additional resources? Our Parent and Family Center is here to help! Find out how to become an “observer” on Canvas to track your student’s academic progress.
Please remember to complete the “Alternative Income Form,” sometimes referred to as a “lunch application.” By completing this simple online form, you can help IHS maintain funding we depend on for critical student resources. Quarter 1 just ended on Friday - you should receive report cards in the mail within the next couple of weeks.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 661.834.8001 - we appreciate your support!
Sincerely,
Guillermo Alvarado, Ed.D
Principal, Independence High School
