We’re excited to announce that Independence has received the “Platinum Implementation Award” for our Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports program! This is the highest level of recognition by the State of California - we are so proud of all the students and staff who work to promote a positive school culture at IHS.
Our athletic programs are continuing to impress, with Football winning against Centennial, Volleyball earning third place in their recent tournament, and Girls Tennis winning the Mira Monte doubles tournament! Way to go, Falcon athletes!
A special thanks to those of you who voted for our Parent Representative positions on the IHS School Site Council. Congratulations to Maria Garcia and Sarah Irby for earning the two spots, and thank you to everyone who ran - we have some truly incredible parents at Independence!
Our students in FFA are working to prepare for the upcoming Kern County Fair, where they’ll demonstrate their skills in a variety of agricultural disciplines! We encourage you to visit their impressive displays at this year’s fair!
If your student is struggling in one or more subjects, please consider one of the academic support options provided by IHS. This past week, we started our after-school tutoring program - students can seek help in math Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:15 - 5:15 in the library. There’s a bus that arrives at 5:30 for students who need transportation.
Another valuable resource that’s available to students at school and at home is Tutor.com. This website provides 24/7 live, online tutoring services to students in any subject. Tutoring can be done via text or video chat, and all tutors are highly trained professionals that can support students with any needs they might have. This includes reviewing concepts, homework assistance, essay review, and study help for upcoming tests. Find more information on Kern High’s Digital Resource page.
Our counselors will be hosting a parent night on September 24, with sessions for all grade levels - if you have questions about programs, pathways, deadlines, or applications, this is the time to meet with our team! More details will be provided soon!
The annual Kern County College Night returns tomorrow (Monday) evening! The Kern County Superintendent of Schools office, in conjunction with the Kern High School District, California State University, Bakersfield, and Bakersfield College, annually hosts the Kern County College Night at the Mechanics Bank Convention Center. The event attracts thousands of students and parents to explore higher education options. This is a free event and reservations/tickets are not required. More information can be found HERE.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns - we are always grateful for your ongoing support and involvement at IHS.
Sincerely,
Guillermo Alvarado, Ed.D.
Principal, Independence High School
